William Trevor is a great contemporary chronicler of the “comedie humanine”.

The subdued tone of his work, so beautifully judged, cannot mask the fact that here is one of the strongest voices in fiction today. He regards the world and the creatures in it with a calmly penetrating yet forgiving eye, and his humanity, incisiveness and sly humor mark him out as a true artist.
